The Joy of Stats

This came across my desk this week. The Joy of Stats.

Health and income stats for 200 Countries over 200 years. In 4 minutes. Fascinating.

Less there be any confusion, I am not a statistician. I know that as a “PE Guy” I am under some pressure to keep up with the current NBA, NFL or MBL stats. In reality, my son knows more about those things than I do. My least favorite post-grad class was a research methods and statistics class I had to take during my Masters work.
Boring.
And Confusing.
And I’m not smart enough to understand all the intricacies.

There are, however, some really interesting stat sites out there. The first (Worldometers) can be quite alarming. It runs real time stats on a variety of global events, issues and expenditures. If you ever think life is going too slowly, this site will depress you back to reality in a big hurry.

But for most people, flashing numbers can quickly become overwhelming. What about those who are more…shall we say….left brained?

This site has a whole passel of interesting statistics represented visually. Sugar in food. Death and Taxes. The Growth of Walmart. The Economics of Energy. Vegetarian Statistics (yes, really).

One of the most interesting is this video, titled The Miniature Earth. The population of the world, represented by 100 people.

Maybe stats can be pretty interesting after all.

Good Videos. Both help put things in perspective just how fortunate we are. You forgot to mention the NHL stats.

The video titled “Health and income stats for 200 Countries over 200 years” by the BBC was excellent. It used lots of data but applied it in a clear and concise graph. I liked how it was animated over the past 200 years to show the growth. This video motivates me to find ways to show student growth over time in an understandable way for parents.
The second video called “The Miniature Earth” was a good example of a Zen Presentation with very few words and meaningful photos. Dan, thanks for showing me that I need to search for great videos like these to help explain data with pictures.
