Tooting for Twitter

by Vlado

Did you know that OMG! and LOL! are now a part of the dictionary? Yes, these abbreviations have made it! I heard about it on Twitter. Then when I wanted to check that I had it correct, I remembered I could check my “retweets.”

The best thing about Twitter is that I am developing a “PLN,” which stands for professional learning network. I don’t follow too many people. I follow a little over a hundred people right now, and my list is growing slowly. You don’t need to follow a lot of people because they often retweet the best soundbytes from others for you. It is a bit like “let my people contact your people.”

The best thing about Twitter so far is the amazing amount of resources I’ve discovered online from the people I follow. There is Tom Barrett’s “Interesting Ways” series and Larry Ferlazzo’s blog, which both provide useful information. There are 100 others who deserve a mention but I decided that I’d keep this post short and sweet, just like a tweet!

I agree. Twitter can be quite useful, in many ways, from mundane curiosities to very applicable teaching tricks. I like the idea of building a professional network with focused learning goals. I have subscribed to a number of educators who clue me in to some neat tools and tricks, but now that my teaching course has changed for next year, to US history in middle school, I am hoping to find more educators dedicated to this particular subject. If I can find teachers in situations like mine, I am more likely to find ideas that are useful to me.

I also have another account that I dedicate to personal interests, such as parenting and smartphones and sports. Quite often, I will find useful tips here. For example, I recently found an article on education Iphone apps for young children, and immediately downloaded several of them.
