It has been quite a few months since Loren first brought the idea of gamification to my attention, as discussed in the earlier post Gamifying Education. His enthusiasm and prodding has lead me to plan to […]

Anyone who stops learning is old …
I, like most people don’t want to get old. So if Henry Ford’s quote “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. […]

It is hard to believe that it was one year ago that I posted “DON’T MAKE ME LISTEN TO THAT SONG AGAIN!!” reflecting on how technology was used (in a small way) to help students learn the Quadratic Formula . My […] -

Thanks Adrian. Before posting the videos I asked students for their permission to use their work. Though everyone gave it, I loved the response that said:
We don’t mind!! At least I don’t at the moment!!

Nicely done Allison! I love how you introduced the idea of graphing in such an open way that allowed you to build on student’s current understanding. And as you said, the students brought out vocabulary and […]

Conversations with students are such a rewarding and stimulating part of being an educator. These discussions reveal so much about the thoughts and perceptions, the joys and challenges, the interests and frustrations, as well as the expectations and motivations of today’s youth. I consider it a privilege to be invited to hear these insights. It…[Read more] -

Over the course of the past year we have been slowly, piece-by-piece, thought-by-thought, prejudice-by-prejudice, reexamining our view of what our classroom of digital natives should look like. We have implemented small changes here and there to either integrate (or hopefully embed) technology into individual lessons, but it is now time to take…[Read more] -

Sorry! I apologize! I was wrong! Forgive my ignorance. Two recent events have caused me to reevaluate an article read during the first COETAIL course. “Living and Learning with New Media: Summary of Findings from the Digital Youth Project” discusses ways in which today’s youth utilize technology and how this could influence “the future of…[Read more]

Ever felt like everyone is watching you? Ever wondered if anyone is listening? Ever wondered if anyone cares what you think? In a fishbowl discussion, the answers to these questions are yes, probably and … ok, so I can’t answer the last question. In our most recent face to face session with Jeff we conducted a fishbowl [...] -

I also did not know all this was going on. My math team students instead spent pi day working on the pi day challenge (http://www.pidaychallenge.com/). The captain of the math team mentioned that a Science test did not go as well as it should have because of the time spent solving the pi day challenge [...]

Nicely done Allison. The connections between the different portions of the brain and the visual learning of math is cool. Determining how to maximize learning using these connections will be exciting. Based on that, the conference you are attending this summer sounds like it should provide some valuable insights. To find a conference that deals [...]

Soon after our face-to-face COETAIL session for Course 3 I had the opportunity to learn a very cool movie-making software called Corel Video Studio . This seemed serendipitous since one option for our project for course 3 involved creating a visual media presentation for the classroom. With great energy and enthusiasm and armed with my new skills, [...]

A constant issue that arises in discussions with math teachers is whether technology is enhancing the learning environment. Over the past two days, my Algebra 1 classes have been learning the quadratic formula. The derivation of this formula involves a rather dry process of completing the square.
