Unit: Structures of Life-Investigation 3
Grade: Three
Established Goals (Standards)
Animals are living, complex organisms, and they exhibit a variety of strategies for life. Living organisms exhibit observable behaviors.

NETS for Students:
2. Communication and Collaboration
Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. Students:
a. interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital
environments and media.
b. communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media
and formats.
Enduring UnderstandingsEssential Questions
  • 1. Each plant and animal has different structures that serve different functions in growth, survival, and reproduction.

    2. Living organisms may behave differently if their environment is changed.

    3. Some animals claim a territory and protect that territory.

  • 1. What are some of the different structures that serve different functions in growth, survival, and reproduction in living organisms?

    2. What do living organisms do when their environment is changed?

    3. How do some organisms respond within their environment?

Stage 2 – Assessment Evidence
GRASPS TaskSix Facets of Understanding
Goal: Students will work in groups to observe crayfish over a period of 4 weeks. They will learn about:
• physical structures of a crayfish and the functions of those structures
• suitable habitat for a crayfish
• if changes in habitat have an affect on the crayfish’s behavior

As students observe the crayfish, they will document their observations via photographs, diagrams, tracking sheets, and daily logs. Observations will be recorded in a weekly voice thread.

Resources: Kim Kofino will assist with technology and recording of voice threads.

Audience: Peers and Parents

Situation: Students will collaborate with groups/partners to share their learning.

Product Performance: A class voice thread presentation including photos, diagrams and daily logs/tracking sheets. The final student product will be a informative report produced by each student tracking his/her learning about the crayfish and its behaviors.

Extension:
1. The FOSS Website: Structures of Life and links
2. Write stories about a day in the life of a crayfish
3. Write math problems about the crayfish
Explain -- Students will be able to explain their observations clearly using appropriate vocabulary

Apply -- Students will be able to apply note-taking and critical observation skills.

Interpret -- Students will be able to compare and interpret data collected on daily observation notes/logs.

Perspective --

Self-Knowledge -- Students will reflect on how they can improve their voice threads in the future.

Empathize -- Students will gain a respect for other life forms and realize that they, like humans, need nourishment, space and a suitable environment
