Unit: Diversity of Life
Grade:6
Established Goals (Standards)
Use good lab procedures and data recording to investigate the early development of complex plants.
Enduring UnderstandingsEssential Questions
  • Seeds contain the dormant, living embryo of plants
  • Growth and development occurs in stages
  • How do plants grow?
Stage 2 – Assessment Evidence
GRASPS TaskSix Facets of Understanding
Goal: Set up a science experiment safely and efficiently

Role: Teacher

Audience: Grade 6 Science students

Situation: Students work in pairs (as part of a wider team of 4) to prepare and set up an experiment

Product Performance: Procedure is followed resulting in correct experimental set up.

Extension:Can be extended into basic science experiments that can be carried out at home.
(Explain, Apply, Interpret, Perspective, Self-Knowledge, Empathize)

Explain: Students can explain why each step in the set up is important (reasons)

Apply: Apply these explanations from above into previous experiments with regard to concepts like controls and variables

Empathize: Students can write a short paragraph "I am a seed" describing what they went through from a seeds perspective.
