  • How do living things get energy?
Stage 2 – Assessment Evidence
GRASPS Task Six Facets of Understanding
Goal: Use science equipment safely and effectively.

Role: Teacher

Audience: Seventh grade

Situation: Science lab: Lighting a cheese ball on fire

Product Performance: Successful combustion

Extension: Basic life skill of harnessing fire
(Explain, Apply, Interpret, Perspective, Self-Knowledge, Empathize)
Through formative assessment, it was clear that students were struggling to light a matchstick. Digital storytelling was an appropriate visual method to convey the skills and techniques. Match burning seemed to work better after showing the video. This was not a skill that I ever envisioned having to teach kids, and still there were many students who were physically affraid of the dangers associated with lighting a match, and refused to do so.
