Unit: Diversity of Life
Grade: 6 (EAP) Science
Established Goals (Standards)
All organisms are composed of cells--the fundamental unit of life
Enduring UnderstandingsEssential Questions
  • A cell is the basic unit of life.
  • Scientists think life began with simple forms and became more complex over time.
  • Cells differ in their structure ad function.
  • All life has always been, and is still, mostly made of water at the cellular level.
  • Why is understanding the concept of a cell important?
  • How did life begin and then change over time?
  • How are cells different?
  • What does it mean that all life is aquatic?
Stage 2 – Assessment Evidence
GRASPS TaskSix Facets of Understanding
Goal: Produce a photo movie based on one section of a reading about cells.

Role: You will work with a partner, and then with your classmates to produce this movie.

Audience: Your classmates; other students around the world who are interested in this topic.

Situation: Using movie-editing software, you will need to gather images; record your reading of the text; and add subtitles.

Product Performance: Your piece of work will be incorporated into a class movie, which will be used as a teaching/learning resource.

Extension:
Explain:

Use a Venn diagram to compare and contrast eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells.

Apply:

Use your knowledge about cell structure and function to make a "Cell Analogy Project", for example The Cell Factory or The Cell Rock Band.

Interpret:

Perspective:

With a partner develop a list of advantages and disadvantages of the two major cell types (prokaryotic and eukaryotic).

Self-Knowledge:

Write a reflection on the strategies you used to make sense of the content from your part of the cells reading.

Empathize:

Write a story "I am a Cell" describing a day in the life of a cell.
