Stage 2 – Assessment Evidence
GRASPS TaskSix Facets of Understanding
Goal:

Students will work in peers to research then teach a game which is unique to their culture. They will participate on a wiki which assists their peers in gaining understanding of the game

Role: Students will act as:

  • Researchers: using online technology to discover information regarding their cultural game
  • Author's: creating a page on the wiki to encourage understanding of their cultural game.
  • Peer Instructors: teaching peers how to participate in their game
  • Creators: editing their video to assist in others learning
  • Collaborators: working with peers to achieve a common goal

Audience:

Peers will act as the initial audience, then students from another school will be the direct audience.

Situation:

Once the students have researched their game and posted it onto the class wiki it is hoped that the class will be peered with another class from another school, students in the other school can share ideas online with each other regarding each others games.
After a one year trial the project will be attempted with another class from another international school. Students will work in collaboration with students from another school in the researching of the games.

Product Performance: Students will...

  1. Research a game unique to their culture then create a page on the class wiki which explains the game with pictures, rules etc...
  2. Create a short mini lesson will be linked to the class wiki page, outlining the teaching plan for the students
  3. Present this to half the class
  4. Embed a short video into their wiki showing the game in action

Extension:

Commenting on each others games on the wiki.
Explain:

  • The rules unique to the game to their peers
  • The relevance of the game to the culture chosen
  • The interaction between culture and games from within a culture

Apply:

  • IT skills in communicating
  • Researching and presenting skills to convey cultural capital

  • Students will interpret the link between culture on play and games from another culture.

  • Students will broaden their understanding of cultures through peer teaching and interaction via technology

  • Students will empathize with other cultures by gaining an understanding of games unique to other cultures
Lesson Notes:

Lesson One: Introduction to the Unit

  1. Introduce the unit, it's aims and essential questions
  2. Demonstrate a game unique to the teacher's own culture.
    1. Teach this to the students
    2. Show the wiki on a data projector, demonstrating general expectations (This will act as an exemplar)
    3. Video the session (show an edited version on the wiki)
  3. Pair Students up, brainstorm ideas (last 5 minutes)
  4. HOMEWORK: Students are to go to the class wiki and navigate through the multi-cultural games pages and set up a page for their game

Lesson Two: How to teach to others

  1. Teach 2 more small games from different cultures to the students
  2. The emphasis in this lesson is teaching students how to teach, Keep it simple, focus on:
    1. How to manage people (Expectations, clear voice, clear pre-planned instructions)
    2. How to manage equipment (Plan, prepare, set up early)
    3. Getting across the main idea of the lesson
  3. Demonstrate the above three areas of basic instruction with the students within the medium of teaching the students
  4. HOMEWORK: Students will complete the research for their game and create their wiki page for their game.

Lesson Three: Student Directed Planning

  1. Students will use this time to plan their mini lesson
  2. They will also practice their set-up and organise any equipment needs
Lesson Four-Nine: Student Presentations

  1. Students will be assigned an order to present (randomly or as requested)
  2. Each lesson will be broken into a fitness time of 10 minutes, then 15-20 minutes for each group to present their game, then for the class to play each groups game.
Lesson Ten: Video Editing

  1. This will be the one lesson where students will not be active. They will have time to work on the mac's editing their footage to a simple video which demonstrates their cultural game.
Other Notes:

The wiki will have extensive help items for the students to assist them in 'how to' on the many aspects of this assignment. It is expected much of the work will then become self-guided where the teacher becomes the 'mentor'.
